MIGRATING FROM SAMBA 3 TO SAMBA ACTIVE DIRECTORY
COLLECTIVITY – DRAC PAYS DE LA LOIRE
Why and how to migrate from Samba 3 to Samba Active Directory? The Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles des Pays de la Loire tells us about its experience with Tranquil IT: challenges, solutions, needs, results, …
Presentation
The Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (DRAC) Pays de la Loire is present on 5 different sites (one site per department). In France, public bodies are generally equipped with open-source software as a priority. That’s why Samba, Microsoft’s open-source LDAP competitor, is used for the public administration directory. In 2014, Samba3-NT4 became obsolete with the release of Samba Active Directory. Administrations were therefore faced with the obligation to migrate their domains to Samba-AD.

Challenges
Samba Active Directory made Samba3-NT4 obsolete when it was released. Samba-AD is the equivalent of Microsoft Active Directory 2008 R2, while Samba3-NT4 is simply an implementation of the NT4 identification protocol. After Microsoft discontinued NT4 support, Samba3-NT4 continued to benefit from enhancements made by the Samba Team, but with the release of Samba Active directory, Samba3-NT4 is set to disappear. As DRAC was equipped with Samba3-NT4, it had to migrate to Samba-AD.

SAMBA’s contribution to DRAC des Pays de la Loire
Transparent migration for users
To perform domain migrations, we use WAPT. We suck in the user’s profile before migration and then re-inject it into the new domain. This method makes for a completely transparent migration for users, who regain their favorites, files and even their wallpaper the day after the migration.
Saving time
Withannual support provided by Tranquil IT, DRAC no longer has to spend time on the phone with the various manufacturers to manage any machine breakdowns. We supervise the DRAC’s fleet and manage it remotely to save Johann time.
