Discover PeerCache functionality with WAPT

Downloading large files, especially in corporate environments, can quickly saturate bandwidth. That’s where PeerCache, comes in.

mORMot GET (mget) and the Peercache

This is an open-source command-line program, similar to the wget tool, that allows you to download files via HTTP or HTTPS with additional features, such as:

  • On the one hand, optional “hash” calculation (to check the integrity of downloaded files).
  • On the other hand, download via a peercache.

Furthermore, mget works on Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

What is Peercache?

PeerCache is based on a simple concept: the sharing of downloaded files between the nearest clients (peers) on a local network.

Here’s how it works in a few steps:

  • A distributed cache on each client: each computer keeps its own cache of the latest packets it has downloaded.
  • A local search before the remote server : When a client wants to download a new package, it first queries its peers on the local network to see if the file is already available.
  • Fast, optimized download: If another customer has the file, it is retrieved directly, without straining global Internet bandwidth.
  • Availability to all : If the package is unpublished, the client downloads it from the usual server, stores it in its cache and makes it available for other peers.

Universal, open-source technology

It is available in Open Source through the mORMot 2 library, renowned for its high-performance, secure tools. This enables solutions like WAPT to integrate PeerCache.

Concrete benefits for users with WAPT

In practice, using PeerCache in an environment like WAPT brings several major advantages:

    • First of all, faster downloads: Files retrieved directly from the local network, reduce transfer times.
    • Secondly, bandwidth savings: Overall, less bandwidth is required, which is particularly beneficial in networks with limited or shared connections.
    • Finally, guaranteed security: Peer-to-peer exchanges are fully secured thanks to end-to-end authentication and encryption mechanisms, guaranteeing file integrity and data confidentiality.

Features designed for performance

With PeerCache, network administrators benefit from a powerful, automatic tool that optimizes bandwidth and enhances the user experience. In fact, thanks to its transparent integration into WAPT, users have nothing to configure: management is done in the background to accelerate downloads and lighten network infrastructures. Note that this new feature is only available for the WAPT Enterprise version.

Furthermore, the tool can be used with a variety of settings to customize downloads: resume downloads, HTTPS certificate verification, bandwidth limitation, among others.
